The Iceholes are League Champions!!!! After getting to the championship game last session and laying a big, fat egg, we had only two goals... get back to the championship game and win it. We did just that.
The thing that I have always loved about our team, whether it was the Outlaws or the Iceholes, is that we always preferred character guys. A team that likes each other and works together will accomplish alot more than a team of good playing individuals. Don't get me wrong, the talent is necessary for most of your team, but you can beat a more talented team with a good team game.
The other thing that I heard a few years back was that a player, who was older, put together great travelling teams but was bright enough to know that in key situations, he should not be out there. I cling to that notion. At 34, I can no longer play like I used to... but I have people who can. They are the ones on the power plays and penaly kills. Again, thanks to the team mentality, no one who was not on one was pissed that they were not on a specialty line. Thanks in part to that we scored 2 shorthanded goals and 2 or 3 powerplay goal in a 10-7 win.
We got great goaltending from Todd at the key times, Drew was out of his mind scoring 6 goals, the defense was solid and the offense skated like they wanted to win. While allowing 7 goals is not ideal, against the Gray Balls on this night, we will take it. They scored some damn fine goals and deserve the recognition for that. However, even after blowing a 3-0 lead at the end of the 1st, we never dropped our heads. I love character guys!! I am so proud of this group.
Since this was also Roger's last game with us, the win was dedicated to him and the #40 has been retired (the first such number to have that honor).
The team that won tonight was:
Offense:
Joe, Jason, Timmy P, Roger, Mark, Steve, Drew, Tommy
Defense:
Larry, Jonzy, Justin S, B-Rad, Tom
Goal:
Todd
